White grubs might be silently damaging your lawn’s roots without you knowing. While a few grubs are normal, an infestation can leave your turf weak, brown, and patchy.

If you suspect grub activity, here’s how to inspect your lawn—and exactly when to take action.

What Are White Grubs?

White grubs are the larvae of beetles (like June bugs or Japanese beetles). They live beneath your lawn and feed on grass roots, weakening the turf. A few grubs won’t hurt a healthy lawn, but too many can cause severe damage.

When Should You Inspect for Grubs?

Late summer and early fall—August through September—is the ideal time. Why? Grubs are active and close to the soil surface, making them easier to find.

Step-by-Step: How to Check for White Grubs

  1. Choose Multiple Test Spots:

    • Focus on thin, brown, or suspicious areas.

    • Test a few healthy sections for comparison.

  2. Cut a Square Foot Section:

    • Use a garden shovel or spade to cut a 12” x 12” square, about 2-4 inches deep.

  3. Inspect the Soil:

    • Gently pull back the turf square.

    • Check the roots and soil for C-shaped white grubs.

  4. Count How Many You Find.

How Many Grubs Are Too Many?

  • 0-5 grubs per square foot:→ Normal. No action needed.

  • More than 5 grubs per square foot:Action Required! Too many grubs can cause serious root damage.

  • Carefully replace the turf square.

  • Press down firmly to eliminate air pockets.

  • Water the area to promote recovery.
